From 1979 to 1981 he worked in the Emergency Department of the Modena Polyclinic and the Carpi Hospital.
From 1981 to 1983 he practiced the profession of general practitioner at the city of Campogalliano (Modena)
From 1983 to 2014 he was a specialist gastroenterologist consultant at the USL of Modena in the hospitals of Modena, Carpi and Mirandola
From 2014 to 2016 he worked as Locum Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist at the Royal Hospital of
Shwresbury (UK) and at Frimley Park Hospital in London (UK).
Dr. Stefano Bellentani carries out activities of hepatologist/gastroenterologist at 360 degrees: He is able to perform

- Abdominal ultrasounds with or without contrast medium
- Quantitative assessment of steatosis and liver fibrosis with Fibroscan or with Share-wave
- Diagnostic and operative esophagogastroduodenoscopy
- Diagnostic and operative colonoscopies
- Sigmoidoscopy with flexible endoscope
- Management of a Gastroenterology Department
Starting from 1 October 2019 he work as a Gastroenterologist/Hepatologist performing Esophagogastroscopies and Diagnostic colonoscopies under sedation, ultrasounds, fibroelastometry and internal consultancy, gastro- hepatological and nutritional studies at the office that belonged to Dr Italo Fumagalli, in Via della Pace 3, 6600 Locarno.
He also collaborate, as he have done from the beginning, with Prof Andreas Cerny and the other hepatologist colleagues of the Hepatocenter of Lugano. Finally, he still part of the "Italian Medical Doctors" in London.
Scientific research and teaching/dissemination activities:
From 1982 to 1984, after having won a Fulbright scholarship, he carried out research work in the field of transport of molecules through the liver at the Gastroenterology Unit of the Veteran Administration Hospital in San Diego, University of California, USA.
He is co-founder, together with Prof.Claudio Tiribelli, Full Professor of Clinical Biochemistry at the University of Trieste, of the Fund for the Study of Liver Diseases, the first non-profit organization for the study of liver diseases in Italy, became ONLUS (Non-Profit Organization of Social Utility) since 1994 of which, from 1992 to 2003 he was President of the Scientific Committee.
He is currently a member of the Scientific Committee of the Italian Liver Foundation (www.fegato.it)
From 2005 to the present he is President of the Scientific Committee of the “Amici del Fegato-ONLUS†association which he founded.
He has been a speaker at numerous seminars in Italy and abroad at various clinical and university institutes and at more than 120
communications at national and international congresses. Won the Sheila Sherlock International Award for Best oral presentation (Dionysos Project) at the biennial Congress of the International Association for the Study of Diseases of the Liver (IASL, Cancun, Mexico, May 1994).
He is reviewer for many international scientific journals (including Gastroenterology, J.of Hepatology, Gut, Hepatology, Digestive Disease and Science, Digestive and Liver Disease, Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, etc) and Referee for the Scientific Committee of the Third World Academy of Science. Since 2000 he has been a member of the Scientific and Editorial Committee of the medical-scientific magazine: “Nutrition and Prevention†. Since 2018 he is Associate Eidtor of BMC Gastroenterology. of the "World Journal of Gastroenterology", of "Annals of Hepatology" and of "Liver International".
He is a member of the following scientific associations:
Swiss Association for Liver Diseases (SASL); Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF); American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD), USA; European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL); American Gastroenterology Association (AGA); Italian Society of Gastroenterology (SIGE).
